With average credit card interest rates at 21.59% as of February 2024 per the Federal Reserve, carrying any amount of credit card debt can become costly in a hurry. Can a debt consolidation loan actually make debt worse? "Their credit score tanks, which means they can't get another debt consolidation loan or even a credit card," said Dvorkin. Debt consolidation doesn't solve spending issuesFinancial expert Andrea Woroch points out that debt consolidation may be nothing more than a Band-Aid if you don't identify and fix the poor money management habits that got you into debt in the first place. Some debt consolidation loans have additional risksFinally, remember that some types of loans you can use for debt consolidation have a unique set of risks.

Some of the best CD rates that I've found this year include 4% to 5% APY. Since my CD ladder is set up with a mix of short-term and long-term CDs, once the short-term CDs mature, I replace them with long-term CDs instead of short-term ones. As the short-term CDs mature and are reinvested in long-term CDs, the original long-term CDs will become closer to maturing. That means I can potentially reinvest the cash from a short-term CD into a longer term one that offers a higher APY. Right now, I don't have the funds to invest all of my cash into long-term CDs.

I've been working with wealthy clients for nearly 15 years, and I've noticed a few common habits. I've been advising wealthy clients for nearly 15 years, and I'm often asked for the secret sauce, or the commonalities I see in my wealthiest financial-planning clients that make them successful. My most successful clients lean on us to help them separate those emotions and make sound financial decisions. Investing can be intimidating, but financial planners recommend index funds to make things easier. Index funds are generally low-cost, but make sure you understand what fees are involved. Instead, experts have a suggestion to reduce the overwhelm for new and experienced investors alike: total stock market index funds, which give you exposure to the stock market more broadly. AdvertisementWhen you're picking your total market index fund, keep in mind that many of the funds are tracking the same indexes. Susan Dziubinski, an investment specialist at investment research firm Morningstar, identified total market funds as one of the five best ways to invest money.

I asked a financial planner how I can grow my passive income since I can't work more in a week. It felt like the only way to continue to expand and earn more money would be to introduce passive income streams. But in 2024, I found myself eager to find a few new passive income streams. "Audit what you're already working with and see how you can turn it into a passive income stream." After a month, I was able to bring in $390 in passive income just through those ads.

I always tell my financial planning clients to keep an emergency fund — but I don't keep cash on hand. We recommend keeping that money in a highly liquid vehicle, like a high-yield savings account or money market account. Your priority for your emergency fund should be access and safety, not returns. I have a much more intricate understanding of market risk and the impact of market downturns. The rule I refuse to break: Save (at least) 25% of gross incomeI urge my financial planning clients to prioritize their savings and investments.

I was slow to diversify my income and seek out new opportunities for passive income. At first, I didn't take the time to brainstorm or research ways to bring more passive income streams into my business. When starting a new business, especially as a solopreneur, build passive income streams into your plans. Paying business expenses with my personal fundsWhile I do keep a close eye on my personal finances, that hasn't been the case with my business finances. In the past, I wouldn't have seen that charge for months, because I wasn't closely looking at my business expenses.

Read previewFor months, the Houthis have relentlessly fired missiles and drones at merchant and Western naval vessels in key Middle Eastern waterways. The US and UK militaries have carried out several rounds of joint strikes targeting Houthi facilities across Yemen. On a far more frequent basis, however, American forces have carried out unilateral, preemptive strikes targeting drones or missiles before the rebels can fire them at nearby ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Sullivan followed up four days later with a call to Johnson to highlight the measures in place to track aid in Ukraine. They spoke often with Johnson’s staff, including meetings at the White House and on Capitol Hill. Meanwhile, White House chief of staff Jeff Zients, Ricchetti and Goff spoke with Schumer and Jeffries and their staff almost daily to strategize on how to push Ukraine aid forward. Biden and Johnson spoke by phone the next day as the speaker briefed him on his plan to move the aid package forward. “We discussed the contents of the next US military aid package,” Zelensky said.

But many people don't realize just how much of their insurance coverage is tied to their employment. Disability, life, health, dental, vision — all can evaporate quickly after a pink slip. Life insuranceAnother common employer-provided insurance is group life insurance, which pays out a death benefit if you die while employed. Similar to disability insurance, though, this group life insurance is contingent on your working at that company. That's why I highly recommend considering an individual life insurance policy.

The information for the following product(s) has been collected independently by Business Insider: Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card. Here's how I combined rewards credit card points, benefits, and a free night certificate to take a $7,000 trip for less than $350 per person. Both my husband and I have the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card from American Express, and we had each gotten a free night certificate with that card. I transferred some American Express Membership Rewards points to British Airways to complete the transaction. The main reason was that our Aspire card came with up to $400 in resort credits a year, meaning our Waldorf charges were ultimately reimbursed.

This week, a reader's car was damaged when their friend drove it with the parking brake engaged. When he finally finished, my best friend did me a huge favor by driving from Portland to Seattle to bring me my car. While these feelings are perfectly natural, allowing them to ruin your relationship with your best friend would be unfair to you both. Knowing that your best friend "can barely afford rent" and still expecting her to repay you for the car parts is the wrong choice. But even if it isn't, I hope you don't lose your best friend over a single space-out.

I like putting money in CDs, and one option that will help long-term with taxes is a SEP IRA CD. I started moving money between high-yield savings accounts, CDs, and other passive income-earning investments like REITs and dividend stocks. Interest and earnings from savings accounts, CDs, and other investments are considered taxable income. Instead, after paying my taxes, I reassess how much money of interest income I actually made and decide how to use the cash then. However, unlike a regular CD, CDs in your retirement fund have contribution limits set by the IRS.

In the late 90s, I invested money in the stock market without knowing much about the stock I bought. AdvertisementThe stock market has recently hit several all-time highs. I have some money sitting in an investment account that I manage myself, and it is so tempting to buy some individual stocks. Don't get me wrong, the stock market can and does (for many people) give better returns than safer investments. I tried and failed at researching and buying individual stocks without the guidance of a financial advisor.

Check the person's background to learn more about themBefore seriously considering taking financial advice from an influencer's content, Secco recommended vetting them to understand their credentials.
